"NO
MAN IS AN ISLAND" - GRACE IN HAMBURG
On
Sunday February 24 Anneli came to Hamburg, Germany, with
the creme-de-la-creme of the Norwegian music scene; Ketil
Bjørnstad, Arild Andersen, Jan Bang, Bendik Hofseth
and Eivind Aarset to perform Bjørnstad's piece "Grace".

After
the success at the opening of Vossa Jazz in April 2000 and
at Balejazz 2001, Balestrand, both in Norway, this wonderful
part of music was performed at the Jazzland Norge Festival
2002. The Norwegian festival which started two years ago
and has become an annual event in Hamburg.
Grace
was performed in a quite unusual and bombastic venue: the
old "St. Johannis" church in the heart of Hamburg,
which was organized by the famous Jazz And More (JAM) who
is also organizing the every-summer-festival "JazzPort"
in the harbour. This was a very special evening in an old,
bright lighted church, while the snow was falling outside.
Most
of the people who were waiting at the entrance didn't know
exactly what they could expect. Only a few people knew Grace
and Anneli Drecker on beforehand. But at the end of the
concert most people were overwhelmed by the fantastic sound
and the unexpected voice of Anneli.

Ketil
Bjørnstad and his ensemble warmed the hearts of everyone
in the sold out St. Johannis. Anneli was singing the old
words of renaissance poet John Donne together with singer
and saxophonist Bendik Hofseth, completed by the guitar
of Eivind Aarset and the bass-player Arild Andersen which
caused minute-long applause with standing ovations. Last
but not least Jan Bang supported with virtuous "sound
sculpturing" and vocal treatment on his Akai sampler.
Back
in the snow on the streets, 500 years old words from John
Donne are still in the head: "No Man Is An Island".
After all, nobody will be leaved alone tonight in cold Hamburg.
