MEMORIUM
DOES NOT EXIST!
On midsummer's
day, the longest day of the year, Anneli will perform a new
piece called Memorium at The Festival of North Norway. It's
not easy to prepare a new and exclusive piece of 16 compositions
when you're in Helsinki with a-ha. But with help from good
friends back home Anneli is sure it will work out fine. But
then another unexpected problem showed up...
THOMAS
OLSEN
- Memorium doesn't
exist! It was Lauren (Savoy) who told me this word doesn't
exist. But originally it was a title on a song I wrote many
years ago. And even if the word is made up, it sounds good,
don't you think?
Anneli is not sure
what the meaning of the word is, but if it has something
to do with memories that would describe her new work very
well. Several of the songs she will perform on Sunday are
old.
- Some of the material
is almost 12 years old. But I will also use some demos that
didnt't make it to the album "Tundra". But 60%
of the songs are brand new.
One of the songs
is called "The World Outside", and if you saw
a-ha live at Vallhall in Oslo last year, you're probably
one of the few that have already heard this tune. Then Anneli
performed as support act as well as joining the guys on
stage. And "The World Outside" was one of the
songs she performed during the 30 minute warm up. Another
song she has performed live earlier is called "Tiger
claw".
- The festival let
me use these songs because they've not yet been released.
Anneli was specially
invited to be this year's festival composer, which means
she will stay in Harstad during the whole week, and do different
performances. She will do Grace with Ketil Bjørnstad
and Jan Bang, and a concert with Bel Canto beside Memorium.
But in between she will also go to London and sing with
a-ha at Royal Albert Hall!
- It will be hectic,
but when I'm on my way to London I'm done with Memorium,
and may finally breathe out. We'll pop the Champagne on
the plane!
Last time Anneli
performed an exclusive piece like this was in Tromsø
in 1999, at the World Women Conference. The piece was titled
"Tundra", and the rest is of course history. Will
Memorium result in your second solo album?
- I have no plans
for a second solo album right now. First of all I have to
wait and see what happens with Bel Canto abroad. I would
like 2003 to be a quieter year, and this fall I will be
busy touring with a-ha, so I need to spend some time with
my family after that. Even if I got the material, it doesn't
mean I automatically will release a new album. There has
to be something more to it.
